State of user research within Birmingham

Hi all,

I’m a student at UoB, I am presently undertaking the MSc in Human Computer Interaction with an ambition of becoming a user researcher.

I was wondering if anyone might know of freelance user research consultants or individuals presently in a similar role within an organisation that I might be able to meet with to discuss the field with?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, welcome to the forum.

What do you mean by user research? Just so we’re on the same wavelength.

Thanks Daniel,

To clarify I mean user research as falls under the user experience umbrella. User researchers tend to undertake investigations into a user base and conduct experiments to provide qualitative & quantitative statistical insight into user behaviours etc.

An example of the role in industry.

Well, if you’re looking to be a pure user researcher, there’s relatively few jobs. Most folks I know do user research as part of a broader UX/Usability/Other role. I think I’ve seen maybe one or two pure ethnography roles in the last 6 months, mostly related.

Have you been along to ? Would seem the obvious first port of call. There’s a fair few of us with UX interests about.

Edited to add, it’s mostly a scale thing. The larger an org gets, the more it can break down disciplines to highly specific niches. Brum has a lot of SMEs where you might get “UX person”, if you’re lucky, but often they’ll be a designer/frontender too.

Thanks for the reply Matt,

I did attend a UXBrum meetup and the guys were very convivial. I was mostly interested to see if anyone on might know of any of the more specialised research-focused individuals in the local area. (Not looking at those within academia.)

I just came across which may turn up some people of interest at the next event (not yet scheduled.)

Thanks for the insights.

Hi Matt,

I am a freelance user researcher based in Brum. All of my clients are based outside of the midlands at the moment but I think it is a growing field and I am sure there will be more and more researcher roles in the midlands, in the future.

Hope this helps,

btw: I have just started a UX Research group if you are interested

@jody perfect. Thanks!
