Sign Up, Sign In and Sign Out Vs Register, Login and Logout

I imagine this is probably a silly question that doesn’t really matter too much in the grand scheme of things, but what terminology do you prefer, and why?

  • Sign Up, Sign In and Sign Out
  • Register, Login and Logout

Having just take a quick look around Stack Overflow, I found an answer based on research by Jakob Nielsen (someone a referenced a lot at university).

The answer suggests Nielsen’s book, Homepage Usability, recommends going with Sign in and Sign out, based on a “survey of several large-scale websites” (i.e. everyone else does, so you should too).

I think I’m starting to feel against the idea of Sign Up however. As suggested by one of my friends on Facebook, Sign In and Sign Up are far too similar, and there might be some confusion as to exactly what signing up is. I’m not sure I’m a huge fan of Register myself, but I love the idea of Join.

Anyway, what do you guys think?

Don’t know, but I know some (non-Brum) people who will, so I’ve asked on twitter. Will report back.
